CAUTION: You must set the MAYA_UI_LANGUAGE environment variable via the System Preferences. Setting this environment variable in the Maya.env file does not affect Maya behavior. To run Maya in English within a non-English OS environment (Mac OS X): Click the System Preferences icon. Select Language & Region. Add your preferred non-English language to the Preferred lanugages. Select the new langauge as your primary language for your OS.

If you want a light-colored interface in Maya on OS X on the Mac, then there's a different procedure for that. You want to open up the applications folder. And I've already got that open. Go to the AutoDesk folder, and within that you will see a folder for your Maya version. I've currently got Maya 2014. Open that, and you'll see Maya Terminal. Double click on the Maya Terminal to launch it. And within the Maya Terminal, you need to type in the following command. Maya -style macintosh. And that's really the only style that works on the Mac, and press Enter. Okay and now Maya has launched with the Macintosh style applied. And you can see we've got dark text on a light colored interface. The Maya Terminal will remain open. And you can't actually shut it down or you will shut down Maya itself. And then when you close Maya the terminal will stay open, so if you need to launch it again then you can just go ahead and reissue that same command.
